I’ve got a story out at Rolling Stone this afternoon that exposes a group backed by Mike Lindell attempting to solicit information about Georgia election security systems from county election officials.

It’s just the latest effort in what can only be described as sweeping and coordinated attempts by supporters of Donald Trump to subvert the 2024 election by a variety of anti-democratic means. From the Georgia State Election Board passing rules that give more power to local election denial officials to refuse to certify results, to the RNC being involved in those rules, plus the RNC’s involvement in voter purge lawsuits, as well as widespread efforts to question the legitimacy of tens of thousands of voters in Georgia and elsewhere, what we’re witnessing is the American right laying the groundwork to claim that any results showing a Trump loss in November are not legitimate.

It’s just me and a colleague here at AD, breaking news on election deniers and threats to democracy that the national press can miss. Support our efforts by choosing a paid subscription.

First, they will try to hold up certification based on bogus allegations of widespread fraud. Then, a Congress that Republicans hope will be ruled by House Speaker Mike Johnson and the GOP can hold up certification on their own, possibly using parliamentary maneuvers to allocate Electoral College votes in favor of Trump — whether he actually wins the popular vote in certain states or not.

Meantime, the election denial movement, led by prominent figures like Lindell, are working overtime to access records and systems that they think will help them prove widespread fraud that simply doesn’t exist. Of course, proving that fraud is secondary to what will be the actual result of their efforts: sowing enough distrust in elections to gain the support of millions of Americans who will back attempts to manhandle Trump into the White House by constitutionally questionable means. Today’s story is just one brick in the structure that is being built by election denial forces on the right to shore up Trump’s forthcoming claims of a stolen election — and his authoritarian hunt for power.
