What comes next — and how you can help decide

Hey everyone, jumping on here real quick to ask for your input as I begin to look forward to — I hate to say it — next year’s midterm elections. There’s a lot going on and a lot to cover. One of the challenges of this job is to write and report on what happens on a given day while still staying on top of bigger issues that require deeper, investigative focus.

I thought it would be helpful to have a better understanding of what you care about the most, so I’ve come up with a poll to help identify your biggest concerns as we continue on in this second Trump administration. Obviously, I’m likely to continue monitoring all these issues because they’re really all the same thing — the American right’s attempts to dismantle democracy and fully establish a system of minority rule over the rest of us.

But knowing what you care about the most will help me decide how to allocate my (very limited) resources from time to time. If you ask me, it all comes down to elections. We still have them, for one! They’re still relatively free and fair, for another! But Republicans are working very hard to change that. Once they make it so that our votes count far less — or don’t count at all — it’s game over for the big D democracy. That’s when we’ll have to start looking into how to get the hell out. Of course, by then it might be too late.

I’m optimistic that we won’t get to that point. I figure that we’re in the midst of the Empire Strikes Back. It’s dark and cold, we’re on Hoth, and things look bad for the rebellion. But ain’t it funny how things always seems to change for the bad guys…
