Expose election deniers with American Doom – we need your support
We’re looking at election deniers in six swing states crucial to the 2024 election. But we need your help.
If you’re reading this, thank you. Thank you for subscribing to my newsletter that began as an attempt to make sense of what I’ve been seeing for the last 10 years and more, and is becoming a reader-supported home for holding election deniers accountable, as well as a space for exploring the grim realities of American life that don’t often get covered elsewhere.

Shortly after January 6, 2021, while all eyes were on Washington, I started to dig into local election officials who helped to sow the belief in election lies that led to the attack on the Capitol and might very well try to steal the next election.
I started by combing through local election board websites and calling far-flung, small town offices to compile lists of names of officials — more than 500 of them in Georgia alone. Then, I took to their social media pages to find evidence of skepticism or outright denial of election results. Since January 2022 I’ve filed 62 public records requests in Georgia alone, and other requests in states across the South where election deniers have infiltrated local election boards. These efforts went on for a year before I’d verified enough election deniers to publish my first story on the issue for the Guardian, which showed that believers in the Big Lie had taken over an elections office in Spalding County, GA — part of a coordinated takeover of election boards across the state. Since then I’ve published more stories for the Guardian, Rolling Stone, and for you, via this newsletter about the election denier takeover that has swept offices across the country.
So far, I’ve found 62 election-denying officials across eight states, most of whom would not have been exposed if not for my work.
Now, I’m looking into six swing states across the country that employ local election officials who support Trump’s election lies. I need your help in exposing them before it’s too late. There is more work to be done, and I need your support.
Why American Doom, and why now?
Despite bringing attention to this troubling threat to democracy, I’m still the only journalist continuously investigating local election officials who support Trump’s efforts to overturn 2024. To continue these efforts, I need your support. If you’re a free subscriber to American Doom, you’re probably here because of my appearance on Rachel Maddow, which came after the publication of my Rolling Stone story about Republican election officials across the country who have refused to certify election results in recent years.
I’m asking you to take the plunge and become a paid supporter of American Doom so that I can continue the important work of exposing election deniers who are currently in positions of power that could be key to determining the results of this crucial election.
Thanks to American Doom’s subscribers, I’m excited to introduce a new member of the team here — journalist and graphic designer, Bree Zender. Her research helped make the Rolling Stone exposé possible and has also been the backbone of recent American Doom exposés that have exposed election denial officials in Arkansas and Mississippi — and today you can also see her fresh design on the site, making American Doom a newsletter with a look befitting of the themes, stories and investigations I explore here.
But we need help to expose scores more election denier officials in six swing states.
Your subscription goes directly toward those efforts.

The stakes
In the coming weeks, I’ll be rolling out my findings about election officials in six swing states who have publicly expressed their support for election lies. This work will expose these officials in the event that they try to threaten voting rights or overturn results.
Plus, your support will help me buy treats for my dogs, Zeppelin and Maggie May.
How can you say no to these faces?
